As presented at the 44th Annual PAMA International Symposium, July 23, 2026, in New York City, here are the slides of the panel presentation, Marching to the Beat of Safety: Understanding heat stress in marching band, presented by Dr. James Weaver, Dr. Neha Raukar, Sue Petrisin, and Randy Dick.
This panel was introduced by Dr. Neha Ruakar:
Good morning. Today we’re going to talk about an athletic population that is often overlooked when we discuss heat illness—marching band performers. We spend a lot of time thinking about football players, runners, and soccer athletes. But marching band students rehearse for hours during the hottest part of the summer while wearing heavy uniforms, carrying instruments, and performing with remarkable precision. Today I’d like to share what we’ve learned from studying this population and where we think this work is heading.
