About the conference

Chapman University in conjunction with the Performing Arts Medicine Association presents the 6th Annual Healthy Approaches in the Training of Performing Artists Conference: Changing Our Future. The conference is September 10th and 11th in the Partridge Dance Center at Chapman University. The two-day format includes lectures, workshops, movement sessions, panels and posters for Medical Professionals, Educators and Artists in the field of Music, Theatre and Dance. All information is based upon proven principles and methodologies gathered from current research. This conference aims to support continuing education for teachers and medical health professionals working with performing artists. Educators can enhance their teaching skills supporting safe and effective practices which maximize performance and minimize injury. Medical health professionals through lectures and hands on workshops will advance their understanding and strategies in caring for the unique needs of performing artists.

Unique Opportunities at the 2016 Conference:

Conference coordinators Robin Kish, MS, MFA and Janice Plastino, PhD are dedicated to providing a program which becomes the bridge between artists, educators and medical professionals in the performing arts. The field of Performing Arts Medicine and Science is growing and the number of medical professionals actively involved with performing artists is increasing. At the same time arts educators and artists are move aware of the need to support their instrument with safe and effective training practices.

The conference is geared toward bringing both communities together to create meaningful collaborations to support performing artists. Opportunities created for this year include sessions for individuals within and across disciplines to have time to talk and develop meaningful networks and projects. Practical application sessions for educators and medical professionals will be offered by experts in Dance, Music and Theatre. Student researchers at the undergraduate, masters or doctoral level are encouraged to bring their research ideas and projects and receive feedback from experts in their field of study. Please email kish@chapman.edu if you or your students would like to participate.
