the 3rd Annual Healthy Approaches in the Training of Performing Artists Conference:

Medical Issues and Applied Practices

The 2013 conference has been expanded to two days and will include Dance, Music and Theater.  Medical experts in performing arts medicine will present medical issues of performing artists including stage fright, concussions, nerve impingements, core strength and vocal issues on Saturday August 17th.  Performing arts education specialists will continue the conference on Sunday August 18th with lecture and movement sessions addressing training and injury prevention in performers.  Dance, Music and Theatre will have breakout sessions specifically designed to support the individual training needs of each genre.  All information will be based upon proven principles and methodologies gathered from current research.  This conference is geared toward educating teachers to improve teaching skills and safe practices, and health professionals will be introduced to new strategies, care and medical skills. All levels and types of Dance, Music and Theatre will be included.

The keynote speaker is the noted James G. Garrick, M.D., San Francisco, a distinguished orthopeadic surgeon and pioneer in the diagnosis and care of the dancer and is the author of numerous books and scientific papers.  He is joined by medical faculty Chris Koutures MD, Performing Arts and Sports Medicine Specialist; Bonnie Robson MD, Child Psychiatrist;  Sunil Verma MD, UCIrvine Professor of Laryngology specializing in the professional voice; Linda Brennan, MFT, PhD; Katherine Ewalt, ATC; Art Ando DPT; among others. Additional faculty in dance include Samantha Marcella, RhetOracle Dance Theatre; in Music faculty includes Pamela Blanc, Alexander technique specialist; in Theatre faculty includes Jonathan Pope Evans, MFA Assistant Professor in Acting and Directing.  More faculty to be announced.

At the end of each day a question and answer session is included.

Location: Partridge Dance Center, Chapman University
Lunch is included in the registration fee.  Registration is available for one or two days.
